White House Garden is Great!

Wow, the White Garden has the nation talking. I think a terrific
Saturday Night Live Bit would be to get six of us on a panel talking
about it. Here are my 16 cents worth:

First, There are a lot of gardens in this country that produce "$40
dollar tomatoes." So what? These folks are gardening, talking about
what is happening in their garden and eating something "they know from
where it came." It doesn't matter if it is the White House or your
house, it is gardening. That is good for the country and good for
Garden Writers. And we need all the help we can get, IMHO.

Add the fact that the adult involved in the White House Garden has
enlisted children. May be there will be another generation of young
people gardening. I am beginning to see more and more in my talks and
I am sure that the publicity over the White House Garden will help
improve the demographics of the hobby that supports us! I am
anticipating that the Obama children will, in fact, weed. Their care
taking Grandma will see to that if Michelle Obama doesn't. Grandma is
very old fashioned and I am betting she gardens!

Then there is the "Par" or "Victory" garden aspect of it. Enough said.
(I wish they would put up a PAR sign).

Finally, there is the organic aspect. Who would have expect that 15
years or even 10 years ago? And, when the chemical industry
complained, they got their heads bitten off. (Anyone remember when
The Garden Writers almost broke up in the early 90s because the chems
vs the webbies (soil food webbies) were at each other's throats? Is
there anyone who is suggesting the WH Garden use chemicals?).

Put me on the list of Garden Writers that is thrilled by the prospect
of lots of talk about this Garden over the season. We should all fan
the flames!

Cheers,

Anchorage (I can see Sarah Palin from here)

P.S. I am questioning the use of herbicides and pesticides on the WH
lawn. I've see it and it is full of dandelions and other weeds...so I
doubt they are using Weed-Be-Gone. In addition, they are rolling
their new lawn seed in mycorrhizal fungi which suggests to me that
they understand the benefits of teaming with the microbes, if you will!
