Re: WHITE HOUSE GARDEN

>From what I read today, from DC newspapers etc., the garden is going to be
maintained by one of the chefs. He came from Chicago where he was in
support of local farmers and plans to do the same in DC. So, yes he is being
paid for by the government, but I got the impression he was doing it because
he wanted to. I don't know many chefs but the few I do know, would love to
source their food right outside the door if they could, but they also
support local farmers where they can.

I would like the idea though to have more of a ripple effect. There are so
many subdivisions popping up with silly covenants that include no vegetable
gardens or compost piles. If the White House can put one in, it may just
give someone in one of these developments a chance to change the rules in a
positive way.
We can at least hope, anyway!

What you said is very true for the home
veg gardener. ( and I was one for twenty years). The WH garden is
being cared for by public employees who are paid (not the homeowner
who is not). We should support all the organic growers out there who
are trying to make a living and have to pay taxes on their land and
have a cost of the money invested in land and equipment, mortages and
loans to pay. The WH garden paid for by taxpayers is a costly show
piece which may inspire more home gardeners to to one also but maybe
they will be inspired by the money they will save and the taste of
the veg produced rather than trying to copy someone else
