Re: WHITE HOUSE GARDEN
Practically speaking, of course the Obamas must purchase organic vegetables
from nearby farms. There's simply no way one small garden can produce
enough food to feed everyone that must be fed on a daily basis in the White
House.
This garden, however, is about a lot more than merely feeding the occupants
of the White House. It's about being an example to other people. It's
about teaching their own children how to garden. And, perhaps most important,
it's about teaching the children of Washington D.C., most of whom have never
gardened in their young lives, where food comes from and how to grow it --
to give them a chance to get their hands in the dirt and have the pure joy
of helping to produce a perfect tomato, or mess of green beans, or
whatever, to give them a feeling of accomplishment and the empowerment of knowing
how to do something practical and useful with their own hands. And,
ultimately, it's about making gardening "cool" again to a new crop of children.
In this context, the financial cost of the project is totally irrelevent.
We need to remember that money is not everything!
