Re: WHITE HOUSE GARDEN
Hello, All!
For those of us who want to continue promoting the "locavore" movement, growing food sustainably and even organically, I would offer an idea.
There is an entire community of magazines mostly throughout the U.S. under the umbrella of "Edible Communities" that publish in individual geographies from Edible Allegheny to Edible White Mountains. Get on their website
http://www.ediblecommunities.com/content/<http://www.ediblecommunities.com/content/>. and click on "publications" where you'll find each of them displayed with the links. Then you can do what we all do: get to know the publication and contact the respective editorial staff with story ideas.
My own state of Connecticut has Edible Nutmeg (EN) which will publish an article by me in the upcoming Spring edition on growing vegetables in containers which I mention only as an illustration of the possibilities. I'll have another one in the Summer edition on planting for fall harvests, what we call in New England our "second season."
Edible Nutmeg's stated raison d'etre is as follows: "Edible Nutmeg is a quarterly magazine that celebrates the harvest of the Nutmeg state. Filled with engaging stories and enticing photography, Edible Nutmeg helps define the local cuisine, promote the local bounty, and build ties between farmers, fishers, and the rest of the community. By demonstrating just how much our landscape offers, our magazine and website point readers towards the region's wine, seafood, produce, food shops and restaurants."
And they do exactly that. Supporting and promoting the "Edible" publication in your area if you're lucky enough to have one can add to the buzz over the White House garden, helping to extend it to new gardeners and readers as they get on board with the whole idea. They take it a step further by promoting sustainable agriculture, another idea with which new vegetable gardeners can get on board.
We're witnessing another great confluence of ideas, economics and leadership. And as Jeff already alluded, who would have predicted we would have even a small focus on organics and healthy harvests? But here we are!
