A good and interesting article, but Tom, you mightn't be so high on tulip poplars if you had the one in my front yard. It's the messiest tree imaginable. Last year's seed clusters are still gradually disintegrating, adding to the millions already dispersed in my lawn and ground cover. It's leafing out now and will soon flower and start dropping sap bombs; you can literally feel the stuff hitting you, like it's raining Karo syrup, if you stand under the limbs. If I foolishly park under it, the sticky sap coats my cars in less than a day, attracting every grain of dust or pollen that wanders by. The sap also glues my wiper blades to the glass and seals my windows shut. I have to park on the lawn most of the summer.
In short, it's a lousy choice for a street tree, a sure-fire complaint generator for any municipality that would plant rows of it.
