Re: Does the quality of reciprocal links count?

Technically - your blog/website has a "value" - often measure by Google's
"page rank". You can easily find this from any number of websites. One
example and not the best is http://www.smartpagerank.com/ There are also
plugins for Firefox that can give this to you on the fly as you browse.

Think of your sites Pagerank as a bank account. When you get a link, you're
adding to your bank account. When you give away a link, you delete your
bank account. It's not straight arithmetical - in that it's one for one but
for the purposes of illustration - that analogy works.

If you give a "few" links to lesser sites - you aren't penalized but if you
give a "lot" of low value links away, you delete your own bank account -
particularly if it's not filled up with incoming links websites of similar
or greater pagerank.

Incoming links are one of the ways that Google measures your pagerank and
this in turn directly influences your traffic. In rough terms, the more
inbound links, the higher the pagerank of your site, the easier it will be
for you to rank higher in search terms. So the more inbound links - the
better.

This is why there's such a demand for links from high traffic sites. And
why some sites will gladly pay a few bucks for a link - whether it is
through giving you products or outright paying you for the link.

I've been looking at a formalized link exchange system for my websites but
haven't gotten around to it yet. I do a few here and there.
