Re: Fave Organic Fert reply
I have been told that wheat, being a grain crop, is not treated with the
same chemicals. It is also re-sown each year, making use of long acting
herbicides impractical.
I've done hay bale gardening, but not straw bale. With hay, there are a lot
of nutrients available as it breaks down. What do you use with straw?

I'd like to add to this discussion in regards to straw bale gardening. I
grew vegetables in straw bales and gave presentations until I realized there
was a problem with clopyralid sold as sting used on the fields. As you say
it passes through the animal but is long lasting and suppresses plant
growth. It even makes it's way into municipal composting which then passes
to the home garden. Here in Western Oregon I'm able to trace to the grower
and ask if they've used it. Organic wheat growers usually want to till their
straw back into their fields or for other uses. Bales clean of this product
are a lot of fun for growing veggies and can improve the soil but I've been
leery of over promoting it.
