Boy, and I thought my glasses were annoying when my sweat pooled into
them. :)
I agree with David (who responded later) -- my Palm V does just about
everything I need it to, and is indispensable in the field.
When I'm out photographing, my camera (Nikon N90s) is hooked up to my Palm
via a serial cable that records the exact camera settings with each shot.
I also hook up my Palm to my GPS to record the location of whatever I
photograph, as well as the name of the plant. For personal comments,
I prefer to use a voice-activated recorder (with a lapel microphone or
headset) that I make observations about the plant into -- the Palm just
isn't very good for extensive writing. When I get back to home or the
office, I dump the tape into an audio file on my laptop and transcribe
it at my leisure.
I do find my laptop to be wonderful in my personal garden. I often bring
it outside when I'm planting new things. It gives me a great opportunity
(via wireless) to search for information on the Internet about ideal
conditions for a plant or whatever, as well as a quick and permanent
way to store information about where I plant things. The only problem is
that I usually only have one clean finger to type with...
