Re: [GWL]: Old Growth
The trouble with commercial forests is that the commercial enterprise
needs only a certain kind of tree of a certain age. This is fine as far
as it goes. But a real old-growth forest has different types of trees of
all ages, standing dead trees, deadfalls, and logs in an advanced state
of decay. All of these states of wood are parts of a complex ecosystem.
If we simply eliminate one part, well that's like pulling a board or two
out of the floor. We may not notice right away if we don't usually step
there. If we keep pulling boards --- fast track to the basement. --
