Re: [GWL]: F&G and Other Crashes
Dear Andrew-
Almost 8 years ago I left my flower shop - made the decision to close it
because of the pressure of all the bigger stores taking a cut from
the fresh flower sales. We noticed increasing - decreases in our sales,
but if the customer wanted service they would pay us for that. As a
retailer diversification was important but, the only problem with that
was you need large chunks of cash to lay out for new avenues of sales.
This same thing is happening to many garden centers and nurseries. The
switch or tends to new products - especially in the nursery end - leave
some nurseries with invested stock that can not be sold because the
products are no longer "trendy." One must have a great deal of
foresight in order to ride the wave of success in the industry. One
also needs to invest money in crops that are high yield and high value
to compensate for any loses that may occur to crop failure or change in
trend. It is very complicated and easier said than done. I am a
horticulturist who has been watching the trends for years and I saw the
demise of the flower shop industry coming. That is why I got out of it.
With decreasing profit margins and increasing overhead one has no
alternative but to either leave the business or divert the business to
something else. I was one of the lucky ones to get out without owing
anyone or being in debt. Hence the career change. One just needs to
know how to repackage and renegoiate the market.
