Re: [GWL]: Can o worms & gnats

Hi. Can't really say why my Can-O-Worms doesn't seem to get any flies (or very few). I do keep
the orange peels and a lot of citrus fruit out of it tho. As I have a backyard composter, I can
be selective as to what I put in. At my environmental club, our classroom vermibin, which used
to be an aquarium, never got any flies either. My bedding of shredded paper will also have a
layer of leaves and I do get sowbugs..they are no problem and add to the community of insects to
show people. My castings in the Can-O-Worms are also of a slightly different texture. Bit
lighter in colour.
Interesting that you should say every cafeteria should have one. Each school not only has to
have some good environmental teachers on board, but the volunteer or paid staff that look after
the lunch room also have to be educated. The class room that I held my Environmental Club in was
also the lunch room and the person that monitored it for lunch wouldn't tolerate it. Either the
worms went or she went. She won. So my worms were kept in the boiler room with the caretaker and
brought out for the Environmental Club. Sad, but true.
Do you know about Mary Appelhof's film on vermicomposting? Also the one on microscopic insects
in a vermibin. Nice chatting with you on this. Call Davis at 1-800-609-1223 in BC. He is a
distributator and knows a lot more. Can-O-Worms also changed it name to Worm-a-roo with a
different design that I have not seen. Hope this has been helpful. Larraine.
