Re: [GWL]: In the right areas
OK, since you asked.....i write, edit, proofread and photograph for
Chicagoland Gardening magazine, a glossy publication for the Chicago
metropolitan region that was started by past GWAA president Bill Aldrich. we
publish 6 times a year, have an office, but i do most of the editorial work
by email at home. i've been receiving all copy and sending it on to the art
director via my trusty little Macintosh Performa.
a 68-page issue usually has 4 features, with stories on plants and gardens,
both homeowner and professionally designed. department stories have included
stories on woody plants, food gardening, native plants, birds, garden
tools/products, how-to. Univ of Illinois Extension has provided a what-to-do
item and a story in most issues. we do a large calendar of events/classes and
have a Q and A dept. as well. we are currently, however, revising all of the
above and setting forth on a redesign both graphically and editorially. we've
been doing this for 5 years, with all of us having day jobs. bill works at
the Chicago Tribune. i teach English as a Second Language to immigrants in
the City Colleges of Chicago. it's an interesting life, but a bit hectic at
times. carolyn ulrich
