1) Indeed, the old growth forests are a sacrosanct because they are
complex ecosystems that cannot be replaced by the saplings that are
planted by the companies who harvest them. In some areas, forests
are clear cut and then burned, some say to stimulate the germination
of seeds in the soil, some say to "clean up" the debris, i.e. to
clear everything away in order to make it easier for the companies to
replant with single species saplings, creating more of a plantation
than a forest.
Either way, a second growth forest ecosystem, even one that has
sprouted on its own, will never be the same as the old growth forest.
2) The wood from old growth trees is desireable because it is more
dense and stronger than wood from plantation grown or second growth
"reforested" trees.
