I don't think I was on the list yet when Rick sent out his message,
so I have no idea how far I am from the mark with this response. But at
least I can say that I tried... :)

Gardening is a hobby with me. It's a very time-consuming hobby,
but I don't rely on it to put food on the table or gas in my car.
By day, I work as a Senior System Engineer for the National Center for
Supercomputing Applications [1].

But as soon as I go home, my mild-mannered geeky being transforms into
either an entrepreneur extraordinaire or a mad gardener, zipping about
the yard with pruning shears in hand. Which one pretty much depends on
the weather and what kinds of deadlines I have.

On the entrepreneurial side, I manage/run Mallorn Computing, Inc. from
my home. Mallorn specializes in providing technological solutions for the
Horticulture Industry. When I was an undergraduate studying Landscape
Architecture I was dismayed by the lack of computer software available
for landscape architects and horticulturalists. I think that's probably
what inspired me.

Anyhow, Mallorn's services range from simple Web hosting to the
development of online stores and catalogs for nurseries, or even wireless
networks tied into centralized databases for arboreta/botanical gardens.

We also run hort.net which, despite its ancient Web age of 4 years,
is really still in its infancy. This year I'm finally devoting some
time to it and I think it's going to turn out pretty darned cool. :)

My garden (which I jokingly refer to as the Mallorn Test Plots) is on
a 60x120' lot. There's not much room for plants there, but I somehow
always manage to cram more stuff in. The garden is only four years old,
so I've no doubt that I'll run out of space soon.

In terms of publications, I wrote some horticulturally-geared computer
software as part of my Master's research in Horticulture. The software
is still used by students at the University of Illinois, and there are
a few articles that we published in HortTechnology about it.

I had been writing a computer book about a UNIX program named 'procmail'
for O'Reilly & Associates, but it fell through when my editor left for
greener pastures.

Lately I've been devoting my time to Web publishing for hort.net.
This includes my amateur photography gallery (up to 2000 photos now!),
some plant profiles, and a few howto articles on various gardening topics.
I'm also developing a lot of 'behind-the-scenes' features that should
appear over the next few months.

My dream would be to quit NCSA and switch to hort.net full-time, but I
don't know if it could pull in the salary that I've grown accustomed to.
That's why horticulture still falls into the 'hobby' category. :)

Well, hopefully I haven't bored everyone or missed the point of this
entirely...

Sure it sounds impressive, but it can be as mundane as any other
    job... Believe me. :)
