RE: [GWL]: Who is he anyway?
All right Lon, but I'm only going to do it once (all heave a sigh of
relief).
I'm an attorney practicing in SE Wisconsin and owner of Nemorosa
Horticulture. I've been collecting and growing rare and unusual plants for
over 20 years. I started out as an orchid snob and had over 2000 plants
under lights at one time. Over the years I've grown caudiciform and leave
succulents, carnivorous plants, gesneriads and wierd little tropicals. My
tastes have grown more cosmopolitan and I've moved out from under the lights
and out-of-doors. I now grow many things, primarily rock garden perennials
and woodland plants. I also test plants for their suitability for the
growing conditions of the upper midwest.
The passion for plants began taking over the practice of law some years ago
(there are some stories there--clients never complained about the occasional
fungus gnats in the face from the plants in the office). I developed a
specialty in The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of
Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) particularly as it impacts trade in plants.
I've been to several international meetings, and have written on the treaty
and on the Endangered Species Act.
Nemorosa (latin = "from the woods" and a component in many plant names) is
my right-brained activity. It's a small company that functions as an
umbrella for a variety of horticultural and nature related endeavors. I grow
and occasionally sell plants (many from seed that comes from all over the
world), design and install gardens, write and photograph on
garden/nature/science topics, give talks, and teach perennial gardening at a
local technical college.
I've written for Fine Gardening, the Milwaukee Journal/Sentinel, the Rock
Garden Quarterly, Orchids, Orchid Digest and many others (some that have
nothing to do with plants!). I'm developing an essay-style column that I
hope to peddle somewhere, and have several book projects gestating.
While all this makes me sound really busy, I'm not sitting on easy street
and still scrabble from day to day like everyone else. The "split"
personality probably impacts both halves adversely and may wind up costing
me my marriage, but I can't do without the plants.
Well! This is all certainly more than you wanted to know, but I told you I
would only do it once!
