Not only is Neem toxic to honeybees, it will kill any beneficial insect it touches – it is a general purpose insecticide. On the other hand, if you spray the plant and do not hit any beneficials, the residual Neem will still work against pest insects in two ways. It will in some cases become an anti-feedant to bugs that chew on the leaves with Neem residue, especially with caterpillars. It will also serve as a repellent for such pests as aphids and white flies. The repellent function is good for a few days. On roses it is a major benefit because it has very good anti-fungal capabilities and will prevent black spot, rust, and mildew. It is not yet labeled for its fungicidal features, but will be soon. Bonide is selling Neem made by Organica. It is the only Neem product using all the components of the neem oil; other products use only part. The importance of that fact is that Bon Neem, as they call it, is in fact an insecticidal soap, with all the functions of Safer’s Insecticidal soap, but with the anti-feedent, repellent, and anti-fungal capability on top; not bad for something that is also used as a tooth paste in India.
