Dear Sheri, In response to your questions: I haven't been asleep, just too busy to be active on the list this summer. I'm an editor at a newspaper, photographing one book and trying to sell a second, and operating a wedding photography business simultaneously. Press kits are something I know about. Include a nice shot of yourself, at least 5x7, possibly with one of your exotic plants. Color that will reproduce well in black and white is preferable. (Squint your eyes and you can see if there is enough difference in the color picture's tones to reproduce in black and white.) Include a bio of yourself and photocopies of any articles that have appeared on you and your work. If you haven't had any press coverage yet, you might consider hiring a PR person (it could be someone who works at one of the local papers) to write the article on you, complete with quotes, that you'd like to see appear. Include copies in the kit. The media are free to draw from this as they like and it ensures you get some accurate quotes in print. Refer people to your website. Give a phone number and the best times to reach you for phone interviews. As for what to wear to book signings, from all the ones I've been to (not my own), women dress as they might for a nice lunch out on the town. You're the celebrity. You can get away with pretty much anything. I checked out your website as requested and it seems to offer a lot of information. Unfortunately, I had difficulty figuring out how to register and the site kept knocking me off. I gave up after three tries. The main thing that seemed to be lacking, though, is photos on the home page. It would brighten things up. You could even use the images to click on. I'm sure there are many photographers in our wonderful group with files of tropical images. Best of luck. I look forward to having more time in a few weeks. Andrea Barrist Stern |
