I just received a press release from Garden Shed Productions concerning a new book they are promoting which states "Our gardens are not good for the atmosphere. They contribute much more CO2 than O2. They contribute to global warming.
"A New Era of Gardening" is the first of its kind - it is the only book, ever, on gardening for oxygen. It provides a through analysis on how a landscape produces O2 and CO2, and then provides a realist model to balance the two."
Over the last 150 years the level of CO2 in the atmosphere has soared by 25%."
The author Douglas Kent apparently does not have a university degree as it is not mentioned in his bio.
It has been a great while since I received my degree in horticulture, but I don't recall any negative relationship that would be the case if an excess if CO2 was the result of the complex respiration and photosynthesis relationship in plant growth.
The atmospheric analysis indicates that N2 is 78%, O2 is 20%, Ar is .93% CO2 is .0314% with Ne, CH4, He, Ke, H2, aand Xe being trace elements that are present.
The increase in CO2 can be traced to the increase in burning fossil fuels, not the excess production of CO2 from food, fiber, forest, or landscape plants.
The release ends with "Douglas Kent presents environmentally friendly concepts that are innovative and potentially controversial. 'A New Era in Gardening is a cogent and interesting text that redefines the ecology of gardening."
I have searched the web to see if there is any research that supports the claims of the press release. I have not been able to support his premise. What I have found actually debunks the assertion that gardening contributes to global warming.
Anyone else have an opinion?
