Title: Re: [GWL] Unusual lecture problem
Doreen, the issue was the money but it's not the issue
now.
They asked me to give a lecture, I asked them if they'd like me
to do two, and they said yes - but then it turned out that they only
wanted to pay me for one! In the spring, it was left at the point
where we were miles apart on the fee, but I was assured that this
would be resolved to my satisfaction "straight away". So the
topics were agreed - subject to the fee being agreed. Then came many
weeks of silence. Frankly, I began to think they were trying to get
someone else.
During this silence some issues came up in relation to the health
and home of my elderly mother in England which made it necessary for
me to be with her next summer and prudent for me not to accept any
more lecture bookings at all. They were then informed that I would no
longer be available, expressed alarm as they were already publicising
my appearance and then sent me an email beginning "Thank you for
agreeing to particpate" and saying they would be sending out a
letter of agreement in a couple of weeks!
To get to this point has taken, at a guess, thirty or forty
emails and a number of long telephone conversations; I have dealt with
three different people.
It's clear that there is a lack of communication and a lack of
timeliness within the organisiation. But my need is to help my mother
reorganise her life. If the deal had been done, I'd have flown back to
the US just to speak at this event and then flown straight back to
England. But they didn't even come up with an improved fee until after
I'd withdrawn.
But all this detail is really not the point: the point is, there
was no deal - but they announced I was coming anyway. Doesn't seem
right to me.
Graham
Ask for more money than they can afford.
