Re: Unusual lecture problem


Given the whole story, I think you're well within your rights to "just 
say 'No.'"

Also, given the strength of your well-deserved reputation, it won't do 
you any long term harm. As for feeling morally obligated, I don't think 
you are--write them a letter detailing the chain of events and explain 
that the deal was never firm in the first place and that personal 
matters have come up that make it impossible for you to do it--you have 
to be in England.

It will all die down. They can find another speaker and you can stop 
worrying about them.
