Re: Pets and Plants - A Free Ebook

Duane - this is something you should check with Pat. He provided the pieces
from his end and I from mine. If there's a copyright problem, I'm sure he'll
want to deal with it immediately. Doug

My spam filter identifies spam in the inbox but does not block it. And I
understand that it is possible to mistype an email address, so after an hour

I reordered and triple checked that I had my email address right. Thanks,
Sheri Ann, for sending it to me.

A more interesting question, though, it that of electronic publication
rights. I wrote Bill, the Garden Cat, at least the original, and had I been

asked if it was OK to put it in an ebook I surely would have acceded, but I
wasn't asked. When Pat put it in his "Best of" book, he requested permission

first and I believe paid me a nominal sum.

Perhaps because it has been so drastically edited, there may be some thought

that it comes under the fair use doctrine. But that would entail notice in
some form that it was only an excerpt. And though everyone here knows that
any writer resents the changing of a single word they wrote, the radical
surgery in this case leaves the patient as little more than a scrap of meat
on the gurney.

If anyone would be interested in seeing the whole piece (about a thousand
words), email me off list and I'll send it to you.
