Another Free Ebook
I, too, have experimented with a free illustrated ebook in PDF format. I
mentioned it on GWL some time back -- it's "Gardening in Small Spaces" and
it includes my writing and photos. It is nine pages long and the file is
1.44MB.
It's free because it carries a printable book order page advertising my book
business, while at the same time it is a useful item for the consumer.
Daryl Pulis put it up for download on the CompuServe/Netscape Garden Forum
and Doug Green made it available from his book site:
http://www.douggreensebooks.com/bbmackey/smallspaces/ where it gets a lot of
hits.
I am happy to email it to anyone who emails me at bbmackey@prodigy.net and
asks for it.
At least 900 copies went out through various means. People are allowed to
forward it to others so it is likely that many more than that are
circulating around. Anyone may give it to anyone else but they can't sell
it.
Here are the results so far. I got a few book orders directly and I get the
impression that it led to other indirect book orders. But not all that
many -- people looking for free things do not often want to purchase
anything. I had several people write to me and ask me a garden question or
two. It led to an invitation to lecture to a garden club, too.
It was meant to be read onscreen, but several people mentioned printing it
out. That is ok with me. A lady in Nova Scotia printed it out in color and
took it to her garden club chapter meeting.
As people get used to ebooks, they will become more popular and perhaps more
saleable. On the other hand there will soon be way too many of them
available as more and more people figure out how to make and send PDF files.
Best wishes,
Betty Mackey
