Re: help, voles!

You're right in being concerned about secondary poisoning. I share that concern and although I'm nowhere near a chemist or whatever specialty knows about this, I did do some research before settling on this approach.

Bromethalin is the active ingredient and is needed in much lower dosage to do the job than other poisons.  The animal stops feeding on this neurotoxin with about 1/3 of what they usually consume of other poisons.  Therefore, there is a much smaller amount of toxin in the carcass.  Second, the toxin doesn't accumulate in the tissue of the rodent, so predators or scavengers are not likely to be adversely affected by eating poisoned carcasses.  

Not a perfect solution, but what is when the hand of man interferes with nature?
