Re: Rain Garden Redoux (sp?)
I think the whole impetus for rain gardens is in regard to storm water
management. While these gardens have been around for about ten years there are
new federal regulations going into effect that require municipalities to update
and strengthen their stormwater management policies and practices. One of
the avenues that towns and counties are taking is to add rain gardens and rain
garden education projects as part of their new policy initiatives. This is
being done through many state Extension Services and here in Westchester
County (NY) the Office of County Planning has received a Federal grant to educate
and inform the general public about the benefits of rain gardens. There is
already on substantial rain garden completed as a demo project and the
country is planning small grants and awards for homeowners to build their own. As
a wetland commissioner we are seeing our professional staff require and
suggest rain gardens more often as replacements for the old dry well schemes which
do noting to 'treat' the runoff, only capture and dissipate it. I have a
page of links on rain gardens if anyone would like a copy and it includes some
great PDF books on rain garden design, function and planning.
