Hi Kathy,
How about a tomato beauty pageant? You could do it for kids and crown a Tomato Princess or for teens an crown a Miss Tomato. Tomato associated costumes could be part of the fun. Or, how about a cooking with tomatoes contest? A biggest tomato contest is always popular, too. You could get some merchant sponsorship and give away nice prizes to ensure good participation. 

A plant your own tomato booth could teach kids how to pot up a seedling or even plant seeds, although it's pretty late in the year, now. And, if you're encouraging people to grow their own, you could promote Plant a Row for the Hungry. Your event sounds like it would be great fun to plan.
