Mass Hort's Unpaid Bills

Hi everybody--

Did anybody else get a letter from Mass Hort about the fact that they're not
paying their bills?  I spoke at the New England Flower Show in March and was
surprised that they did not have a check for me right then.  I was even more
surprised when they failed to pay me for several months. Well, now the

Anyway, they had already invited me back for next year's show, and as you
can imagine I've declined that invitation until they pay up.  It's
frustrating to be out the speaking fee, but even more irritating is the fact
that I spend $758 on a plane ticket they failed to reimburse me for.  (And
no, that's not luxury travel--that was a basic coach fare from Arcata to
Boston.)

I'm finding that I'm having to get more and more assertive about speaking
fees.  A government agency failed to pay me for a talk last year, and after
months of invoicing, they finally gave the excuse that they were waiting for
a grant to come through.  I told them that my fee wasn't contingent upon
their future grant awards, and they eventually paid it off in installments.

Just thought I'd let you know what's going on in case you're doing business
with them, too.
