Re: photos can also be stolen from the web

That's why I only put up small images on my website, under 400 dpi, so that
they cannot be reproduced in print. At least, you have some control there.
Images may be stolen for other websites, though.

All this recent discussion on stealing text and images leads me to my
favorite rant and depressing realization. Intellectual property is rapidly
becoming an antique. Look at the music industry. CDs are ripped left and
right, and artists get no royalties.

I worked in the recording industry eons ago as an A&R representative.
That's a fancy title for babysitting recording artists with self-destructive
tendencies. It used to be that a recording contract was based on so many
albums recorded and the royalties from them, plus an up-front bonus....much
like book contracts used to be. Now, an artist or group signs a contract
that specifies X number of live concerts. That's how money is made by the
packager and the artist. CD sales are almost peripheral.

As writers and photographers, we need to rethink our vehicle, too.
Obviously we cannot give concerts, but we can speak, perform (so to speak)
at commercial events and consult for businesses. That's only a small part
of the answer, though.

The days of intellectual property profit are gone. What are other ways we
can make a living? Let's hear your answers.
