Writers write. And when I couldn't make a living writing what I wanted
(which was most of the time), I wrote something else. Things I've written
in my lifetime include planetarium scripts, museum exhibit labels, radio
scripts, pr for a radio station, advertising copy and pr for anybody who
would pay, newsletters, grant applications for government and
non-profits, non-gardening newspaper columns and magazine articles,
(ghostwriting) organizational management and sociology texts, fundraising
materials, promotional material for conferences and trade shows,
environmental investigation reports, instruction manuals for industrial
equipment, etc.
But at least I was writing every day of my life. I viewed everything I
learned about everybody else's business as grist for my writing mill and
over the course of time, I've had unexpected uses for some of the
strangest material in my knowledge base.
I also did a lot of public speaking - ten years in the planetarium and
eight years working as a marketing consultant and trainer.
What each of us has that is valuable is the accumulation of our life's
perspective and experience, which provides peculiar combinations of
knowledge and point of view that no one else has. These assets are not
required in order to write ordinary articles on plants and their culture,
or pop-landscaping. We need to find or create for ourselves venues, such
as Horticulture, whose readers appreciate a different level of
information-sharing, or book publishers willing to take a shot at
something out of the ordinary.
At this stage of life, I can afford to be picky about what I do. I know
it's a luxury not everyone has and I am grateful for every moment that it
lasts.
I think we should all keep challenging ourselves to come up with a new
form, or forum, for our expertise. In the meantime, write what you must
to survive, and write what you want when you can. Good luck to all of us.
Regards,
Lois
