Re: Deep mulch materials
For years we have successfully used both hay and straw for deep mulch. We
just purchased some straw that was not sprayed. The farmer said he sold the
sprayed stuff to the highway department. We make our own hay.
Deep mulch is especially effective with potatoes; also tomatoes, squash and
cabbage. Smaller row crops get lost.
I have often heard that hay is not a good mulch because of weed seeds. We
have found that it tend to "mulch itself", thus cancelling out the weed
seeds.
