Re: Email Address List Hijacked

A way long time ago when I first started emailing...someone told me to put a
fake email at the top of my address list. The theory was...if a computer
program got a hold of the list...the first email would throw it out of the
program...

Since this was eons ago...it probably doesn't work anymore...or the
harvesters get around it...but I actually still have two bad emails at the
top of my list...and nobody...knock on wood immediately...has pulled my
list...

Techies feel free to jump all over this as an urban legend...but I'm keeping
my 2 bad emails at the top...!

Subject: [GWL] Email Address List Hijacked

Hello, All!

Sorry to report that while I was out digging in the dirt, my email address
list was hijacked this a.m. To those of you for whom I have a private
listing, my apologies for the annoying solicitation message you got. If you
haven't opened a message from me with "hello" in the subject line, that's
the one you need to delete. Fortunately, it's only a solicitation for
electronics and not something more offensive.

Penny O'Sullivan, didn't you have this happen to you a while back? Can you
or anyone else on this list enlighten me as to how this happens with all the
malware and virus protection we have on our computers? Is there a
particular software package I should have had to block such an event?

I've already changed my passwords and other things to prevent more serious
issues than email messages going out. I've also erased my entire address
file (that I will have to rebuild) on the recommendation of an MSN tech
support guy who thinks they might not have gotten the whole file. Sounded
to me like taking a birth control pill after you become pregnant. What other
steps should I be taking now besides apologizing and advising my email
addressees not to open the "Hello" note?

I fear it will be a sleepless night.

Thanks!
