Trash

Someone just gave me a copy of Birds and Blooms magazine. It epitomizes everything that is wrong with garden writing these days. It took perhaps three minutes to get through it, page by page, front to back cover. There is only the most elementary information, and not much of that. It is written for people who stumble over Dick and Jane.

It seems to be mostly, if not all, reader written. The longest written piece, not counting bullet points, is the four paragraph Contributor's Guidelines. It includes this line: "We reserve the right to modify, reproduce and distribute the material in any medium and in any manner or appropriate place." And this without any payment. (As a matter of contract law, doesn't such a broad use require some consideration to be valid?)

As you can tell, it has made me angry. Is this where Horticulture is headed down the road?
