Re: Trash
Duane,
You hit one of my buttons...beware...
In my most humble opinion, most everything is heading toward "reader
written" as you call it. Why pay real writers that research, use mostly
correct nomenclature and grammar, check sources, interview carefully...when
people will contribute "content" for free? Yes, it is mostly junk,
but...what are we to do? The public doesn't understand what they are
getting. I HOPE it comes back around to quality. There is no comparison
between content and real creative writing...
It is like the unique jewelry I make (mostly bracelets). I use all sterling
silver components and charms, real stones, pearls, shells, etc...and I
design for a theme or colors individually for the client...and make it all
myself...it is difficult to compete with silver color base junk metal and
fake stones assembled in 3rd world countries. Sure the junk falls apart
quickly, they all look the same and they turn your wrist green...but people
still buy the junk...! I don't get it...

Someone just gave me a copy of Birds and Blooms magazine. It epitomizes
everything that is wrong with garden writing these days. It took perhaps
three minutes to get through it, page by page, front to back cover. There is
only the most elementary information, and not much of that. It is written
for people who stumble over Dick and Jane.
It seems to be mostly, if not all, reader written. The longest written
piece, not counting bullet points, is the four paragraph Contributor's
Guidelines. It includes this line: "We reserve the right to modify,
reproduce and distribute the material in any medium and in any manner or
appropriate place." And this without any payment. (As a matter of contract
law, doesn't such a broad use require some consideration to be valid?)
As you can tell, it has made me angry. Is this where Horticulture is headed
down the road?
