Hi Suzanne,
I've planted Skimmia in Pittsburgh in both of our zones 5 & 6 with great success. I bought it locally but assume it was grown in the south since most local growers won't take the chance on a plant expected to be marginally hardy.
I've found the key is to protect it from both winter wind and winter sunburn.
