Re: Skimmia
re plants grown in the south for northern climes
I suspect you're spot on re skimmia, Phyllis I bought it locally but assume it was grown in the south since most local growers won't take the chance on a plant expected to be marginally hardy.
Here's another possible reason for that based on our experience.
Our nursery, Trenton, Ontario, is in USDA Zone 4b. Plants such as Japanese maples, e.g. Bloodgood, Emperor, most viridis, will survive here if given proper care. We prefer to buy ours in from American west coast growers because the rate of growth is much quicker. We still overwinter and toughen it up before offering for sale, and we know survival rate is excellent, but by purchasing in this manner we can save three to five years on growing time.
