Re: hot pepper flakes?
I agree with Ellen. I tried the suet cakes with red pepper and the squirrels were knocking each other over to get to them and running off with big chunks in their mouths. No deterrent at all. I also planted 50 Crocus tommasianus along their route last fall and fewer than 5 came up. The rest were presumably devoured by the squirrels. Dried blood is effective to keep them out of flower pots.
