Best wishes for a quick and less painful recovery!

I'm posting this because numerous people have asked if the listserv is
having a gathering in Dallas and if I'm attending the symposium.

With great regret, I share this. There will be no gathering as I won't be

attending, nor will Doug Green. I'm having, what I hope, is the final
surgery on my shoulder. This has been a tough year for me, starting in
March with knee surgery that infected. Then I fell and broke my left
shoulder. Doctors didn't do their jobs and pronounced me cured, even
though
I couldn't lift my left arm. After a second opinion, I learned that the
bone (humerous) didn't heal and I had no ball and socket joint action.
This
surgery will either repair the bone with a metal plate or replace the
shoulder joint, depending on how badly the broken bone is now decayed.
The
wonderful news is that I will be able to move my arm and lift it the day
after surgery. Physical therapy will be easy, compared to what I've been
through in the last six months.

I'm a Texas girl, born a piece down the road from Dallas, in Ft. Worth,
and
lived in Texas most of my adult life. I was really looking forward to the
symposium. Y'all have to tell me how much fun you had and all the
wonderful
things you saw after the event. I'll be green with envy, but I'll enjoy
hearing your tales.

Meanwhile, reserve time now for a big party in 2011 at the Indianapolis
symposium. That will be this listserv's 10th anniversary. I formed this
list in March 2001 and we had our first cocktail party gathering in
Orlando
in November that year. Due to 9/11, the symposium wasn't well attended,
only about 225 people, but we GWL people partied hard! I first got to
meet
Doug Green, Betty Earl and a number of others still on this list. Jeff
Ball
was there, too. We met daily in the bar and hashed over the symposium
tours
and workshops, talked about the future of gardening writing and wondered
how
much the Internet would intrude upon print media. Ten years later, we
know
how much it has changed everything, but only a few of us like Doug has the
insight to prepare.

Y'all have a great time and give Big D a big "Howdy" from me. Don't miss
the Chicken Fried Steak and Mesquite Brisket, either. And watch out for
armadillos!
