Re: Crazy garden tips (GWL)
Putting lime in a tomato planting hole makes the "soil" sweeter (i.e., more alkaline). Still widely practiced. It's usually thought of as a preventative against blossom-end rot in areas with acid soil.

My Maryland grandfather always said to (and did) put a handful of ground
lime in the hole when planting tomatoes. He said it made the fruit sweeter,
and whether it was really true or not, I always believed his tomatoes were
the sweetest I'd ever tasted.
