Winter Vegetable Seeding

Does anyone plant vegetable seeds in late autumn before the ground freezes 
so that the seeds germinate in early spring?  If so, what do you plant and 
what kind of results do you get?

I'm thinking since I spread compost and shredded leaves in autumn on veggie 
beds that I might be able to plant some seeds, too.
