I commonly plant spinach, not in late autumn but in ... oh, late September,
so it just comes up, then mulch with straw and whatever. Most survives (zone
5) and starts growing early in spring. Sometimes I do that with winter
lettuce varieties. Sometimes I go out in February and scatter lettuce seeds.
But I think an important consideration is that I garden in wood framed
raised beds, which warm and dry earlier. I would guess it gives scattered
seeds a three or four week edge on ground planted seeds. Oh, beets too.
