parking strip gardens in LA and SD areas (and points between)

Hello All,

I'm working on a book about amazing parking strip gardens - you know... those tough little curbside gardens sometimes called "hell strips"!

I'll be down in the LA area Sept 8-12 and wonder if any of our fine members down in the area can direct me to fantastic examples of curbside/parking strip gardens that do something special... whether it's super environmentally suitable, extra gorgeous, uses all natives or blends them especially well, integrates art or structures like seating, provides lots of delicious produce, or has a wonderful, edgy aesthetic. 

I'm mainly looking for private curbside gardens but would like to include a nice selection of commercial curbside gardens, as well.

I would love suggestions for the Los Angeles area, as well as anything en route to and in San Diego.
