RE: [GWL]: Annuals vs. Perennials
Why do gardeners buy annuals over perennials? Or maybe why would you
buy annuals?
And what do you think brings people into garden centers -- not the big
"box stores" but the local independent garden centers.
Lots of people of means buy lots of annuals because they can hire someone to
put them in and they get instant color and splash. I know a couple who
spends $3000 a year on annuals and probably don't have a perennial on the
property. Annauls are easy to plant, relatively easy to care for, give
great color all season long. Lot's of gardeners will change the annuals in
their gardens three times a year; spring, summer, and fall. It's easy and
it gives a new fresh look to the garden three times a year.
Garden centers do give more choice and the prices between the big boxes and
the garden centers are getting closer every year. The place I'm concerned
about is the reputation that garden centers have more knowledgeable staff
available than do the big boxes. I don't think that is as true as it was
ten years ago. The garden center is under the same economic crunch as
everyone else. More and more they are relying on young help who are cheap
but don't know beans about plants. I guess it is fair to say that the
signage in garden centers is still much better than that of the big boxes.
Garden centers more and more are offering a line of gifts which are not
available from the big box. But if you just want some colorful annuals and
are not picky about the variety, then the big box is the way to go in most
cases. We have purchased gorgeous plants from Kmart and from Lowes in the
past few years.

Jeff
