Re: [GWL]: Annuals vs. Perennials

A word of caution when introducing a new gardener to perennials or annuals:
There's a maxim in the wholesale world that the better the grower, the
smaller the plant he can buy in and grow on successfully. The less
experience you have (or the less time), the bigger the starter you should be
starting with.
I think the same principle should be applied to gardeners, if we want them to
succeed and not get discouraged.
At the wholesale level, this means everything from delicate little TC still
in agar, or unrooted cuttings, or seed, on up to the mega-starters like
Yoder's Deep 30 or Etera's bottomless pot. At retail, it's from market packs
up to five-gallon pots -- or, if you know what you're doing, a wilted slip
you got from a friend and forgot about for a day or two. A grizzled
green-thumb can coax just about anything along, but a lot of people can kill
a lot of plants. Newbies will do better if the plants they buy have a little
more meat on 'em.
Sorry, that's a tad off-subject, but we seem to have segued from annuals vs.
perennials into big-boxes vs. independents.
