Re: [GWL]: Annuals vs. Perennials

One point I would like to stress is the perishable nature of plants
growing in containers offered for retail sale. Success frequently
depends on choosing plants that have not been held in the container too
long while waiting for a buyer or after being purchased, to be planted
in their permanent location.

Buying within a day or two of plants arriving at a major chain garden
center is a must because the plants do not generally receive the proper
care to hold them for very long, especially in hot, dry weather.

The smaller the soil ball, the more important it is to purchase a plant
that is in its optimum stage of growth to transplant and continue growing.

Gardeners should have their site properly prepared prior to purchasing
the plants. Once purchased they should be planted and properly watered
for at least 10 days. Planting and immediately leaving for a vacation is
not a good idea.

For gardeners whose plants are destine for containers, the choice of the
planting mix is critical. The type of pot can also be an important
factor as some absorb heat and even when the day is cool, pots in direct
sun can have soil temperatures that are 15-25 degrees F. above the air
temperature. Location, location, location is important - exposure to
hot, dry, winds can suck the moisture out of a plant and require
frequent watering if the plants are to survive.

We could have an interesting discussion on which establishes quicker,
cell paks, 4 inch, gallon, 5 gallon, or larger.

Your answer might depend on the plant species, the climate (cool,
cloudy, light rain or hot, dry, and sunny), automatic water system, and
the individual's green or brown thumb expertise.
