Re: [GWL]: Annuals vs. Perennials

A good new reference book on annuals (and more) comes from Timber Press this
fall, Armitage's Manual of Annuals, Biennials, and Half-Hardy Perennials, by
the always authoritative and entertaining Allan Armitage, whose perennial
books are must-have references for me. This new book also joins the
must-have list if you're at all interested in flower gardening -- it's over
500 pages, so lots of obscure plants covered here. (ISBN 0-88192-505-5, list
$39.95 US)

I thought the following observations from the book pertain to the discussion
we're just had, and might be a nice way to end it:

"What led me to write this book in the first place was not so much the great
renaissance in the use of annuals as it was -- and is --the renaissance in
gardening. American gardeners have shown that they are not monochromatic,
nor mono-plantmatic, or mono-anything. If a plant is colorful and if it
performs well, we want it. The key phrase in that last sentence is this: 'if
it performs well.' .... Annual or perennial, it matters little as long as
the plant provides pleasure."

And he puts plant snobs in their place (aren't we all snobs about something
or other?):

"Don't plant snobs just rot your socks?.....Such people turn into raving
lunatics when they hear the words 'marigold' and 'petunia', and 'impatiens'
doesn't fare much better: all three cause a reaction only slightly less
severe than 'poison oak.' The key is simply to nod your head in complete
agreement--then do what you want."
