Re: [GWL]: Annuals vs. Perennials

I think much of the purchase of started annuals and perennials has to do with
knowledge and lack thereof. Annuals always present an alluring picture in the
nursery, perennials not so much--their beauty is often still to come. But
very important in areas where old man winter does not hold sway is that
perennials are never as flashy, colorful and rewarding as lots of annuals.
And where we have two distinct seasons, hot and not so hot, it's almost
imperative to use annuals to come up with a distinctive and nice looking
flower garden. In Southern California gardeners can plant one set of annuals
in the early to mid-spring, and another set of completely different annuals
in early to late fall for an entirely different flower landscape. Meanwhile,
the perennials, the few we use, do their thing, complementing the annual
colors. It's more work, but it's worth it.
