Jeff:
I have been doing press releases for non-gardening industry corporate
clients for years. I usually try to avoid giving a set fee for the entire
project. Instead I charge an hourly rate of $50 for creative work, which
includes client meetings, research, writing and media contacts--both initial
and follow-up. If I do the mailing, I charge $25/hour for clerical work,
which includes printing the release and labels, stuffing envelopes, etc. I
maintain media lists for specific clients. I also charge expenses, which
includes travel time, printing costs, postage, etc. As a consultant, I
don't have the overhead that larger firms have, so my rates are considered
low by anyone who has priced P.R. services. Many P.R. firms start at about
$80/hour and up here in the St. Louis area. I believe geography is a major
factor in pricing. If pressed I will reluctantly offer clients an ESTIMATE
on the total job, but stress that the bill will be based on hours worked, so
if there are a lot of changes or additions on their end, it will add to the
cost. I also write a lot of brochures, newsletter, etc., and have the same
price structure for everything. I haven't yet done any news releases for the
garden industry, so I don't know how this translates. I would be very
interested in hearing from anyone who has--maybe our GWAA P.R. firm? I hope
this helps. Good luck!
