Why do gardeners buy annuals over perennials? Or maybe why would you
buy annuals?
Eye-catching appeal, especially when blooming size in packs or pots; they look so good in a display; range of colors; a quick fix for a problem area; simplicity - only need water and fertilizer (though these are sometimes forgotten), some kinds don't need deadheading, they can be pulled out and disposed of at the end of the season. Over all I'd say that annuals are 1) an impulse item; 2) a traditional thing - think zonal geraniums (Pelargoniums) for Memorial Day and petunias for window boxes. Sometimes 1 and 2 are lumped together - a traditional, impulse item.
And what do you think brings people into garden centers -- not the big
"box stores" but the local independent garden centers.
The impulse or bargain hunter usually hits the Big Box stores first. Knowledgeable gardeners, and those concerned about local economy will head toward the independent local garden stores especially if the personnel are 1) knowledgeable and 2) the store / center management makes an effort to keep up-to-date with new plant material (especially that advertised or otherwise exposed through the various media and new methods of doing things.
As discussed before in this list, it really does behoove owners of local garden stores / center to have knowledgeable staff; train them and make continuing education available to them; and treat them in a professional manner both in terms of pay and on the personal level.
Hope this helps!
