I really have to take exception with your conclusion that  "It really doesn't matter where you buy the plant."  Having owned a large perennial nursery and also having grown hundreds of thousands of annuals, perennials, seasonals and tropicals for mass marketers and supermarkets....it simply isn't true.  The discount outlets sell a low prices because they buy mostly by contract.  When plant material is grown by contract the grower is virtually forced to cut as many corners as possible.  Even if a plant is grown by the same grower for two different retail markets...and it has the same label and is the same size, chances are 99:1 that the plant sold in the Big Orange Box is substantially inferior to the one sold by a reputable and local garden center who is buying from the same grower.  It's simple economics as well as common sense.  The mass marketers strategy is to sell once to everyone.  The local retailers strategy, if they have survived, is to sell over and over again to the same customer.  When it comes to the economy of scale, the scales are tipped on the side of the retailer, not the customer.
