[GWL]: New Garden Globe Awards
Hey everyone - Here is a copy of the story that will run in the next
Quill & Trowel to let you all know what is happening with the GWAA
awards. I hope to see lots of entries from this list!!!
What is really important is not the name of the award, but the
recognition for the winners. Read and see how we are going to help make
these awards of more value for the winners.
NEW GARDEN GLOBE AWARDS PROGRAM
HELPS BUILD YOUR BUSINESS
Generating more and better assignments for garden writers is what the
new Garden Globe Awards program is all about.
While it is an honor to be recognized by your peers for outstanding
work, the real reward is having your publisher, editor, producer, agent
and prospective "buyers" know how talented and accomplished your peers
consider you. We want these people to know that members of GWAA help
drive the $64 billion gardening industry.
The Executive Committee wanted to let the gardening world know about
these professional garden communicators who rise to the top, but the
"old" Quill & Trowel Awards were mired in some longstanding confusion
and lack of any awareness outside of GWAA. To increase the prestige and
recognition of the awards, they took action. For the first time GWAA
hired a public relations firm, IMPACT Marketing, to carry out their
mission and develop a solution.
The new program positions the Garden Globe awards as the "Academy
Awards" of gardening and specifically targets editors, producers and
publishers that hire you, the garden writers, photographers, and key
garden communication professionals. If you missed the unveiling of the
program in Orlando, here's how it has evolved.
. New Identity
The Garden Writers Association Garden Globe Awards is the new
official name. It's easily identified with gardening and provides a
perfect visual in any format.
. New Award Levels
In the past, there was confusion as to who was receiving what. To
clarify this, old levels were given new names, as you can read in the
Call for Entries. To attract more television, radio and internet
entries, these were separated in to individual categories.
A major change is the Garden Globe Award for Best Talent or Product.
Modeled after the Academy Awards - "Best Writer," for example -- the
awards recognize the best individuals and the best producers in each
category. The Award of the Year still is selected from this group.
. Staggered Announcements
Another big change is the Award of Achievement and Best Talent or
Product Awards which will be announced on April 15, prior to publishing
industry conventions, but the Award of the Year will be kept "secret"
until the Awards Banquet at the symposium.
Staggering the announcements accomplishes two things: First,
recognition is focused on the best in each category. Second, momentum
builds for the "big winner," creating another huge publicity
opportunity.
. Promote! Promote! Promote!
Probably the biggest change is that GWAA is driving award publicity. If
you win an Award of Achievement, GWAA gives you the tools to promote
yourself. If you win a "Best Talent or Product" award, you'll be
promoted within your industry. And if you win the big award of the
year, well, watch out - we plan to make you a star! You will be
promoted nationally with customized press releases, and the IMPACT
machine pushing you to a web of media outlets.
An "on-line press room" is being created with downloadable press
releases and a list of all the recipients. Click on the recipient and
you will find an award release, photo and background on the recipient.
The press room gives Garden Globe recipients access to an "on-line PR
tool kit" to help them take advantage of the publicity machine GWAA is
creating. This do-it-yourself PR tool kit includes fill-in-the-blank
press releases, downloadable Garden Globe logos and tips to generate the
most publicity. PR "how-to" workshops will be held at the conference in
Seattle.
What can I do to help?
You can do three big things to make the Garden Globes a success:
#1 Spread the word about the winners in your columns, on your radio and
television shows and on your internet sites. We need you to help us
spread the word. If you promote the winners now, when you receive a
Garden Globe Award, everyone will help promote you too.
#2 Enter the Garden Globe award competition by January 31, 2002. You
can only win if you enter. The more pieces you enter, the greater your
chances of winning.
#3 Encourage others to enter. If you read a great article, book,
newspaper or magazine, see a wonderful calendar, photograph or
illustration, hear an inspirational radio show or see a great television
program or internet site, contact the "author" and encourage them to
enter the competition. You don't have to be a GWAA member to enter.
Raising awareness of the awards and the winners increases the prestige
of the entire membership, and this helps everyone get better assignments
and make more money. And that, after all, is the bottom line.

Subject: [GWL]: GWAA awards again
I had my question about the awards answered off-list. Gives me the
distinct
impression that one entry is probably all most people ever make. Or
want
to.
'Nuff said.
