[GWL]: awards

Maybe the GWAA should take tips from the Iron Chef and use a numbered
scoring system -- this might alleviate complaints about excessive
subjectiveness. Judging is always somewhat subjective. There's no way around
it; judges are human. But judging should be done within a framework.
More specific category breakdowns also might help. Smallish softcovers
shouldn't be judged in the same group as expensive coffee-table books. Clips
from mid-size newspapers should be judged against others in the same size
category; ditto for larger papers, which have more art/graphic/production
resources than do smaller ones (this is standard practice within the
industry). I know the entry says works are judged on a "sliding scale." That
doesn't tell me enough. What scale?
My two experiences with this contest were mixed. The first time, one
judge like my entry and another didn't. Both said why, and I appreciated
their comments; they were helpful and I learned from them. I looked forward
to entering the contest again.
The second time, the comments were rude to the point of ridiculousness.
It was obvious the piece was judged on a purely personal level, not on a
professional one.
Will I enter again? Not sure. The new "changes" as explained seemed
superficial.
